Behind the scenes at the Cape Town Met…

It was indeed a great feeling to manage the technical production and stage of Cape Town’s first big live event after the Covid 19 pandemic – the 2022 World Sports Betting Cape Town Met. The brief from our client, Donovan Everitt at Cape Racing, was very clear: Build and manage a stage that sits at the heart of the entire event. The logic was compelling and this central stage would be right next to the Winner’s circle and the Glam Garden. It would transform the Met experience for racers and spectators alike by providing a central place for all prize-giving and interviews, and for the famous best dressed competition.

Why risk it?

Often not thinking about it, I am the one jumping off bridges or out of aeroplanes, racing cars in excess of 250km/h or skating down a steep hill whilst holding my 3-year-old daughter by her feet so she can do a handstand on the board with me as we speed down the hill, with parents all around the globe staring at the photos in horror. If there is a risk to take… ya, I am probably going to take it. 

How did Sanlam Investments adapt to Virtual Events?

The pandemic forced us into a light switch moment across all our events – from our day to day client interactions to Signature Thought Leadership occasions, said Cindy Benjamin. “We have learned a lot since those early days and continue to learn as we get better and better. One of the key things we have learnt is that a conversational style event works really well for us, but apart from finding the correct format, the narrative has to remain the main focus. We believe Virtual Events are here to stay, and as we start moving back to in-person events, we see a complimentary mix of virtual and in-person.
